Hormonal IUS

What is it and how does it work?

The Hormonal Intrauterine System (IUS) is a T-shaped device that sits inside your womb and releases the hormone progestrogen that stops ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus to stop sperm reaching the egg, and thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg implanting.

Effectiveness

Over 99% effective when fitted

Who can have it?

Women of child bearing age depending on consultation.

Advantages

Can stay in place for up to 5 years depending on type but can be removed sooner. For as long as the IUS is in place you don't need to think about contraception. Your fertility return to normal once the IUS is removed.  Your periods may become shorter/less painful or stop within the first year of use.

Disadvantages

Insertion can be uncomfortable (Period type pain). Your bleeds may be irregular for a short time after insertion. Small risk of infection first 20 days after insertion.

Risks/Side effects

You will be offered a test for STI's prior to IUS fit. The IUS is not effected by other medicines. You will be taught how to check if your IUD is in place. Small risk of ovarian cysts. If fitted after 45 the Mirena IUS can stay in place until the menopause.
