What is it and how does it work?
A small flexible rod about the same size as a match that is placed under the skin in your arm that releases the hormone progestrogen that stops ovulation, thicknes cervical mucus to stop sperm reaching and thins the lining of the womb to prevent a fertilised egg implanting.
Over 99% effective when fitted
Who can have it?
Women of child bearing age depending on consultation.
Can stay in place for up to 3 years but can be removed sooner. For as long as the Implant is in place you don’t need to think about contraception. Your fertility retuns to normal once the Implant is removed.
It requires a small procedure to fit and remove an Implant. Your periods may change (stop, last longer or become irregular).
Some medicines may stop an Implant from working. After an Implant has been fitted you may experience bruising, swelling, scaring at the Implant Fit/Removal site. You can feel the Implant in your arm but can not see it.
